Electric Heater - Protection And Safety

!±8± Electric Heater - Protection And Safety

Although electricity is the safest and most convenient fuel in many heating situations, it is of course not without its inherent risks. Although there is no possibility of a silent killer, like carbon monoxide, emitting into the atmosphere, the dangers of faulty wiring and the inappropriate use of electrical equipment in areas where water is present create a different kind of danger.

Modern equipment has, of course, diminished the risks of injury or death from all kinds of electrical equipment. In the case of electric heaters, this includes the use of synthetic polymers in wiring, which are similar to rubber in their ability to insulate. Also, modern circuit breakers are able to disable a circuit in the case of a short circuit, or overloaded system.

Sadly electric space heaters are still responsible for many accidents and deaths, despite these modern advances. Fire, rather than electrocution, remains the biggest danger. These fires, often caused by malfunctioning elements or careless use of the heater, are responsible not only for injuries and deaths every year, they also cause millions of pounds of damage to buildings and property.

The elements of many electric space heaters are not only dangerous if they malfunction, the inherent heat can in itself be a hazard. If the heater is not placed a safe distance away from neighbouring furnishings, extremely flammable materials can be set alight, often emitting dangerous gases into the atmosphere. Although rules concerning acceptable materials in furnishings have been tightened considerably in recent years, many old items remain in circulation.

As well as items of furniture, curtains are a major problem. This is because heaters tend to be placed at the edge of a room, allowing the heat to reach all parts of it. Also, as the area in the vicinity of windows tends to be the coldest part of a room, the heater is often placed in this area, making the risk of overheating curtains a very real possibility.

Paper items are also very much at risk, as well as items of clothing, which are often deliberately placed near to heaters to get rid of cold or damp. Of course it goes without saying that all kinds of flammable liquid must be kept well away from fires and heaters. Still, despite this being obvious, thousands of accidents occur every year because this simple advice is completely ignored.

Water is especially hazardous when using an electric heater. Even though there are never any electrical power points in a modern bathroom, which in itself is testimony to the danger of electricity mixed with water, modern homes are often fitted with a stand-alone electric heater on the wall. In this case it is especially important to make sure that all necessary safety checks are carried out on a regular basis. Of course you should absolutely never bring an extension lead into a bathroom so you can use an electric space heater.

If you are going to use electricity to heat your home, especially if you are going to use space heaters which plug into the mains, make sure you do the necessary research into safety precautions, Government policies and recommendations and the advice of charities and associations concerned with safety advice.

Best Whole Room Space Heaters

!±8± Best Whole Room Space Heaters

Many space heaters are advertised as "whole room heaters" - but exactly how big is a whole room? One possible answer can be found in the Vornado heater manual which describes a whole room, relative to the heater's capacity, as 16' x 16' with an 8' ceiling. These dimensions work out to 256 sq. ft. and 2048 cu. ft. respectively - easily the size of most family rooms, kitchens, or living/dining spaces.

Over the last year a major shift in space heater technology has re-shaped consumers' taste in whole room space heaters. Among the winners are those that employ ceramic or quartz infrared heating elements.

Among whole room heater manufacturers, Lasko holds the number two spot for bestselling heaters with its model 755320 tower heater with digital display (). (Number one is Lasko's 754200 compact heater ).

Ceramic heaters have gained wide spread popularity for a number of good reasons. One is reliability. Speaking from personal experience, our Lasko 5141, no longer available, refuses to give up the ghost after 6 or 7 birthdays - or approximately 52.4 space heater years.

A few more reasons behind the popularity of ceramics for heating are quick heat-up and safe operation. Ceramic heaters are also relatively quiet and produce an even heat which is often described as "soft."

Radiator Space Heaters
A radiator will always be a radiator so there isn't much you can do with it. Despite the lack of any game changing technology, the radiator type heater remains one of the safest. Among radiator heater makers, Delonghi dominates the market with its model D0715T Safe Heat Oil-Filled Radiator ().

Micathermic Heaters
Micathermic heaters are basically radiator heaters enclosed by mica panels for enhanced heat distribution. Since they depend on convection for heat distribution they are fan-less and noise-free. Designed for versatility, they can be mounted on casters or hung on a wall, and are said to be a good bathroom heater - which I don't recommend for any portable electric heater.

Once all the rage, micathermic heaters have all but fallen by the wayside. Maybe it had something to do with a customer complaining about sparks shooting from his DeLonghi HHP1500 Mica Panel Radiator. So it's interesting to note that the Kenwood HHP 1500, also made by Delonghi and strongly resembling the original, is one of Consumer Reports' highest rated heaters.

However, all is not lost. The Bionaire BH3950-U micathermic heater () rates 4 out of 5 stars from its users for silent operation, portability, and whole room, non-drying heat.

Convection Heaters With Fans
Fan-forced convection heat is the M.O. of most whole room space heaters. The top rated heater makers in this category are Lasko and Delonghi, mentioned previously, along with Holmes, Honeywell, and Vornado.

New from Vornado this heating season is the PVH, or Panel Vortex Heater (). This heater is a departure both in price and design from Vornado's most popular heater, the round cornered EH1-0034-06 AVH2 Vortex Full-Room Electric Heater (). The new, easy to operate flat panel design houses the same technology used in their more expensive models.

The secret to harnessing Vornado's vortex of heat is to locate the heater at one end of the room with a clear path to the opposite wall. When the air hits the opposing wall it splits and is deflected back around the perimeter of the room to heat every square inch of space.

From Holmes, sold under the Patton brand name, is the new PQH307-UM Tower Quartz Heater with Adjustable Thermostat (). This fan equipped unit is on the smaller end (150 sq. ft.) of whole room heaters and offers two heat settings corresponding to the number of quartz tubes turned on.

This year Honeywell has the distinction of a recommendation from Consumer Reports for its model HZ-817 Electric Convection Heater (). The 30" long, baseboard type heater has no fan and relies solely on convection for heat distribution.

Unfortunately, this heater is a victim of its own success and is either unavailable, back ordered, or sold at highly inflated prices resulting from scarce supply. Kaz USA Inc., the manufacturer of Honeywell, is aware of the problem and suggests the HZ-617 Whole Room 2-in-1 Heater () as an alternative. The main difference is the addition of a fan to the HZ-617 which can be turned on or off at your pleasure.

Without a doubt, the biggest shift in consumer preferences for electric space heaters has been to furniture style quartz infrared heaters. The introduction of EdenPure a few years ago was followed by an onslaught of competing makes and models.

Infrared Quartz Heaters
The newest of these is the Dr Heater infrared heater. Dr Heater features a dual quartz/ceramic heating system, gets food reviews, and costs 0 - 0 less than its competitors.

Finding the best whole room space heater is easy once you know the size of the space you want to heat, how fast you want it heated (heaters w/fans are 3x faster), and your budget.

Steps to a Safe Electric Fireplace Heater in a Corner

!±8± Steps to a Safe Electric Fireplace Heater in a Corner

An electric fireplace heater is a device of comfort. During the days and nights of the winter season, it can provide you warmth and convenience to bear the coldness. Nevertheless, it cannot be ignored that it can also cause some accidents.

Going back to the basics of electric fireplaces, they do not use logs to generate heat. The can either be a wall mount or a free standing fireplace that can be positioned in corner of a room.

They can be purchased from charmglow, dimplex and from many other fireplace companies both online and offline. There are those that can be bought in cheap prices and there are also others that are expensive. Aside from the whole fireplace unit, there are also inserts that can be bought such as electric fireplace logs. Reading product reviews would be a great in choosing which among all of those available is the best that you can get.

However, the fact that they do not use a single log does not exempt them from being a possible cause of home accidents. Therefore, you must take actions that will make the use of them safe without blocking their effectiveness.

If you have a modern electric fireplace heater, here are some precautionary steps that you should implement to ensure the safety in your home. They may take some time and work to implement, but your welfare and that of your family is at risk here so they are all worth it.

Place objects away from the fireplace - This is especially applicable to flammable items. Though electric fireplaces do not produce embers or sparks, they can still potentially cause a fire. A short-circuit can already start it so objects must be placed in a safe distance from them. Practice electrical precautions - Electric fireplaces, as the name implies, is run by electricity. Therefore, safety measures to electric devices must also be applied to them. Those safety measures include proper removing of their plug from the power outlet when not in used, keeping liquids away from them and making sure that there is no frayed wiring before using them. Educate your family about the safe use of the heater - As modern as an electric fireplace is, it cannot seal the heat it generates and so it can cause burns if touched. Teach your family how to properly deal with it to avoid burns and other accidents such as fire. You should take extra consideration teaching the children. Explain to them well the hazards of improper use of the heater. For additional protection, you can put a firescreen on the front of the electric fireplace.

The 5 Best Selling Electric Space Heaters

!±8± The 5 Best Selling Electric Space Heaters

Managing a household budget during a down economy can be a daunting task. One budget item that everyone pays close attention to during the cold winter months is heating fuel costs.

What many home owners have discovered over the years is that zoned heating is an immediate and effective method to keep a lid on high heating bills. Zoned heating is accomplished by turning back the main thermostat 5-10 degrees and heating only the room(s) that are occupied.

More often than not, the favored heating appliance for room by room zone heating is the portable electric space heater.

What follows is a list of the 5 best selling electric space heaters determined by sales figures compiled from Amazon.com.

#5 - Although technically a space heater, the Dimplex CS3311 is best known as the number 1 selling electric stove in the US.

The Dimplex stove appeals to buyers who want something more decorative than the average space heater but doesn't require a lot of space. This makes them ideal for apartments, condos, and RV's.

#4 - Honeywell HZ-2200 Mini Tower Surround Heater The Honeywell Mini Tower is an inexpensive, compact heater that features optional front or surround heat, adjustable thermostat, and back-up thermal circuit breaker.

It is also plagued by complaints of excessive noise, thermostat control failure, and a short working life.

#3 - DeLonghi EW7707CM Oil-filled Radiator This radiant heater is the only type of space heater allowed in college dorms. Since it's a pure radiant heater it has no fan and is ultra quiet.

Although the product description states it has a low surface temperature, you might be better off with the model TRD0715T if you have kids or pets to worry about. The difference is the TRD0715T incorporates several vertical thermal tunnels which keep the hot elements enclosed and out of reach.

#2 - Lasko 755320 Ceramic Tower Heater Ceramic heaters have really gained in popularity over the last few years. Ceramic elements provide instant heat and the heater itself is generally quieter than other fan equipped heaters.

The tower configuration provides more heat higher up and the oscillating (side to side) motion distributes the heat evenly throughout the room.

#1 - Lasko 754200 Ceramic Heater The Lasko 754200 is currently #4 on Amazon's site wide Best Sellers List and has been there for 322 days.

Although compact in size and only 10" tall, it has the same 1,500 watt heat output as larger units. The fact that it's priced around probably contributes a great deal to its popularity, but it would be difficult to remain a best seller for as long as it has if it wasn't a good value.
